Art Corner

Hey! Welcome to our Art Corner! I don't know if this will become a regular post or not, but I have some art to share! In the future, I hope to showcase readers’ work, so if you have any art you want shared, email disabilitypwr@gmail.com!

"The Power of Words"
I made these pieces for a school project. They’re both relief prints, which is an art medium where an image is carved into a block of linoleum or rubber and is printed onto paper with ink. I’ve been making lino prints for about a year now, and these are some of my favorite prints. I was inspired to make them while writing one of my earlier blog posts, “The Language of Disability”.
"Disabled and Proud"

I can’t stress enough how important it is that we understand how language can shape understanding and attitudes towards disability. “Handicapped” and “crippled” are both considered to be offensive, and “differently abled” and “special needs” ignore disability altogether. The most difficult part is that all of the words in my print are still in widespread use, along with dozens of other offensive ways to describe disability. This has a strong influence on perceptions of disability and disabled people.

That’s why I made this second piece. It represents my pride not just in my identity as a disabled person, but my pride in the word “disability” itself.
